Profile
Gonzalo Rodríguez Grau is an Associate Professor at the School of Civil Construction, Faculty of Engineering, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, where he serves as Academic Director of DECON UC and Director of BASCo Lab (Biomaterials for Architecture and Construction Systems). Trained as an architect and mechanical engineer, he combines nearly three decades of professional, academic, and research experience in architecture, engineering, timber construction, digital fabrication, and sustainable building technologies. He holds a Doctor in Mechanics from Université de Bordeaux, a Master of Science and Technology from École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture et de Paysage de Bordeaux and Université Bordeaux 1, and a professional degree in Architecture from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.
His research integrates architecture, engineering, materials science, and advanced manufacturing to develop sustainable construction systems. His interests include engineered timber systems, computational design, digital fabrication, bio-based and recycled materials, industrialised construction, and circular economy strategies. Through BASCo Lab, he investigates mycelium-based materials, architected scaffolds for controlling biological growth, digitally fabricated timber joints, and green-gluing technologies for native wood species.
As Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator, he has led projects funded by ANID, CORFO, CENAMAD, and industry partners. His contributions include patented modular construction systems based on recycled plastics, engineered timber technologies, and biofabricated materials for architecture. He also led the architectural design and multidisciplinary coordination of the Napevomo positive-energy timber house, awarded First Prize in Sustainable Development at the Solar Decathlon Europe 2010. He has published extensively in timber engineering, sustainable construction, and bio-based materials.
