Profile

Héctor Hernández López is an Assistant Professor at the School of Civil Construction, Faculty of Engineering, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He combines 18 years of professional and academic experience in construction, sustainability, and resource-efficient building systems. He holds a Ph.D. in Technological Innovation in Building from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, a Master’s degree in Construction from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and graduate training in business and management. His research focuses on resource-efficient housing, with particular interest in methods, approaches, and technologies that enable more efficient resource use across the building life cycle. His work examines how buildings can be designed, delivered, operated, refurbished, and deconstructed to enable the reuse of components and materials, while generating and retaining value across the building life cycle and contributing to more sustainable urban metabolism. His areas of research interest include circular and industrialized construction, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), material efficiency, deconstruction, urban mining, housing sustainability, and value generation and retention in construction projects. He is currently the Principal Investigator of a Fondecyt Initiation project addressing barriers to the adoption of Circular Industrialized Construction (CIC) through Design for Manufacturing, Assembly, and Disassembly (DfMAD) strategies. He is also a Co-Investigator in a SUSESO-funded project that measures and analyzes fatigue among construction workers, with the aim of improving alertness, safety, and productivity through technology-enabled interventions. Héctor has published in international journals such as Journal of Cleaner Production, Resources, Conservation and Recycling, Buildings, Sustainability, Energy for Sustainable Development, and Ain Shams Engineering Journal.
